Pond filtration works in two stages. Mechanical filtration, handled by skimmers and filter media, catches leaves and debris before they break down and cloud the water. Biological filtration, handled by BioFalls and wetland filters, grows bacteria that convert fish waste and decaying matter into less harmful compounds.
Pressure filters are used when the filter needs to sit below the waterline or be hidden from view, since they can push filtered water uphill rather than relying on gravity. UV clarifiers and algae controllers handle a third problem entirely: free-floating algae that mechanical and biological filtration don't catch, which is what causes green water even in an otherwise well-filtered pond.
A skimmer, a biological filter, and a pump sized to match are the baseline for a healthy pond. Everything else here, UV clarifiers, additional media, pressure filters, is for solving a specific problem once the basics are in place.
